A very famous woman medical doctor, with years of teaching in a famous medical college has this to say about sex when she was asked this question: "Why is it that there can never be a discussion of sex with an impersonal slant?" Her comment which follows is the finest brief concept of sex relationships I have ever heard from a speaker's platform: "With love the sex act is a sacrament. Without love, it is as exhilarating as spitting and gives relief in the same fashion."

Sex is everywhere. You and I would not be here if it were not for it. Handwriting reveals sex appetites and desires the same at it reveals whether the writer is a potential thief, or a domineering, acid-tongued individual. It is this fact that caused me to answer a question badly a good many years ago. In a class in Hollywood, attended by people from all walks in life, including a priest who had traveled some 3,000 miles to take the week's work, some one in the audience put up a hand. "Can you tell from hand­writing if a man or woman is a deviate?"

• THE HOMOSEXUAL AND HANDWRITING

What the questioner meant was whether handwriting revealed homosexuality. My answer was a positive "yes" rather than an evasion of the question. After that in various schools held from coast to coast it invariably happened that some man or woman, or several of them would come up after a class closed, hand me a slip of paper, and in a strictly hush-hush tone ask "Is he?" or Is she?" If I assumed ignorance they stammered and stuttered and ended up by saying "you know what I mean." Certainly I knew what they meant, but as sex is rather primary to life it did not seem to me to be necessary to whisper the question, nor the answer.

However, I should have made my answer to the first question more complete. Handwriting shows homosexuality in some cases and in some it does not. If the writer is conscious that he or she is a homosexual, and is concerned about it, it will show in the handwriting. But if the writer recognizes the situation, and is not bothered by it, or is not worried by what others think, it will not show. It is the mental attitude that shows, not the actual practice of homosexuality.

Plate 127. The handwriting of Oscar Wilde, who served time in prison for homosexual activity, shows no sign of any unusual sex interest. It is the fear or feeling of guilt that reveals itself in handwriting, not the homosexuality.

There are, for instance, thousands of men and women whose hand­writing shows latent sexuality that is classified as "abnormal" who are lost, wandering through life. In such cases the handwriting will show the existence of homosexual desires, even though the writer does not recognize that he or she is one of a minority. On the other hand, you have as your first illustration in this chapter the handwriting of Oscar Wilde(plate 127), who served time in a British prison for homosexual activities, and there is nothing in his handwriting to show any unusual sex interest. Oscar Wilde was a homosexual. It did not bother him. It was not a burden to him. He accepted the fact, and let it go at that.

Lord Alfred Douglas was a homosexual with a subconscious feeling of guilt, and it is the fear or guilt feeling in his mind that created the evidence in his writing (plate 128). However, there is one indication that shows a possibility of the existence of homosexuality. When lower loops are made as square circles, very small, the writer may be married, and have a half dozen children, but the basic inclination was present, and has never been aroused.

There is one truth that handwriting reveals not only about sex in general but about homosexuality. Sex crimes are committed by over-sexed, or under-sexed individuals, but they are not committed by homosexuals because they are homosexuals. They are committed because the writer was basically a criminal, and also a homosexual. There is one other truth that I have proved since the first sex research in grapho analysis was started in 1919. Up to that time no attention to sex appetites had been given me research. Then a fan who had read one of my books and whom I was considering making an assistant on a magazine I was editing at the time, told me he was a homosexual, though he used a different word. Actually he was a little tramp sexually. However, in our conversations I learned enough about him to determine that if sex variants showed their differences in handwriting I would find it. The simple rule illustrated above is the only single rule that applies, and it is an indication only.

• DIGGING OUT A SECRET

However, a professional grapho analyst, using evaluation, can make the discovery. In this regard, a case that developed prior to World War II illustrates the truth of this. Our organization was short of help. Particularly short of young men as office boys, and to operate office machinery. We advertised extensively, and one day a young fellow fairly danced into the office. He had traveled some five hundred miles to get a job, and he fully intended to be hired. However, we did not need him. "Come down and let me buy you a Coke," he said. As we sat across the drug store table, he grinned and said, "You know I think you have a tremendous racket, but if you make money, it is all right with me—and I want a job."

It may have been bait. At least it worked. As a result he followed my suggestion and wrote a half dozen lines and handed it across to me. After you have become thoroughly familiar with the principles of grapho analysis your mind sorts out evidence very rapidly. The professional evaluates a full page in a few minutes even though it may take several hours to work out a complete survey of the findings and be sure of absolute accuracy.

He nodded as I pointed out certain characteristics, agreeing without reservation. Then I added "your writing shows you are a homosexual." He blew his top. He was not a homosexual, and he was insulted. However, when I pointed out that if he had agreed with all of the other traits that had been identified he must fit into the category where his handwriting showed he belonged.

Several weeks later we put him on as office boy. Within three months he had married a girl in the filing department, but they did not live happily "everafter". Instead, they existed, and she clung to him in spite of the fact that he would leave her for weeks without funds, and would return and tell her just anything he thought she might believe. Before too long he quit, and it was not until years later that I heard my named called. He was standing back of me in a hotel lobby. "Come on upstairs," he said, "I've a confession to make—one that you will be glad to hear because it shows that grapho analysis is correct."

• GRAPHO ANALYSIS SUBSTANTIATED

He had bummed around over the country. He had been in veterans' hospitals and in public institutions. He had been kept by two different doctors, and had left each of them on the spur of the moment. Finally, while he was in a great western hospital the doctor hand contacted a state hospital in the young fellow's home state and they had transferred him there for psychiatric treatment. It took the psychiatrist several months before he found that the fellow was a homosexual. The patient had never admitted to himself while he was being kept that he was anything but a normal young man in a tight spot financially, and making use of sex to satisfy not his own desires but as a means of making a livelihood.

It may seem strange but there are many such actual cases. Jerry was one of them. His family was completely without morals. His father and two brothers, though normal sexually were criminals, and his sisters were prostitutes. Therefore, when he ran away from school and the two dismal rooms where the family lived, he knew that men wanted small boys and young men. He put himself in a spot where he could be approached, and became accustomed to homosexual activities, but with nothing but great disgust for his customers who he made a point of "rolling", just as his sisters did with theirs.

You will recognize as you examine this plate of Jerry's writing that his mental ability, his capacity to learn was very low. He had never com­pleted the sixth grade, and then only because he had stayed in the room long enough that his teacher had to do something with him so she sent him on to the next grade. These ill-shaped letters, actually almost formless were a perfect register of his mental ability. He knew the criminal underworld, but he did not participate in it except to steal anything and everything he saw that he momentarily wanted. He always gave what he stole to some­one or merely left it in a hotel room when he moved on to another city. The last time I saw Jerry he was married and had a string of girls, a young man entirely without morals, but never a homosexual.

Larry was a homosexual. He was also a criminal, because he had only one object. To avoid work. He was disgusting in appearance, brilliant enough to have made a great scholar, and he had money enough available to have gained a broad education, and added something to the good in the world. But he was completely selfish and physically lazy. He did not want to study even though he was capable of making top grades, so he did not work. He was a homosexual, but he was not a criminal because he was a homosexual.

He had the criminal tendencies but handwriting did not reveal any signs of homosexuality. He accepted his situation casually, indifferently, and blackmailed men who fell for his offer of sex. He would have found some other avenue of blackmailing if he had not been able to use sex as an excuse. Every waking hour, and probably many of his sleeping ones when his subconscious mind was functioning, he devoted to schemes for getting something for nothing, or without working. He broke up homes, wrecked his lovers financially and physically and went on his merry way. because right down in the depths of his nature he was a born crook.

• HOMOSEXUALITY AND CRIME

Since 1919 I have known and studied literally hundreds upon hundreds of sex cases from murderers who had knotted a kerchief around the neck of a mistress to a street corner fairy. When they have found how complete­ly their handwritings revealed their innermost thoughts, they have almost uniformly been as frank as in confessional. Possibly part of this was due to amazement which resulted from the accuracy of their analyses. Possibly part of it was a deep desire to confide in someone. At any rate, throughout the years homosexuals have confided in me with confidence that I wouldnot betray their trust.

Records of cases have been kept in locked files, and even at the risk of losing my life, I have kept in touch with and studied them. During these years there have been scores of major crimes reported in the press, and in agreat number the accused has been charged with being a homosexual— and in some cases the stories were true. However, long and expensive in­vestigation has proved conclusively that the crime was not committed be­cause the accused was a homosexual, but that he was a homosexual AND a criminal.

There is one marked exception. Homosexuals are both male and female and both sexes have committed crimes, usually murder, when they were married and the inability to cope with married life caused an emo­tional explosion. Time and again a man has killed his wife, and he could not tell the reason. His handwriting would, however, reveal that he had attempted a pattern of life for which he had not natural inclination or even possibility of adjustment. Eventually the situation became unbearable, and he escaped by doing the obvious. Destroying the cause of his misery.

There is one other point that should be faced in dealing with homo­sexuality and what handwriting says about the condition. Older homo­sexuals do not lead younger girls and boys into homosexuality. Not in one case in a thousand. Checking handwriting after handwriting one fact has stood out clearly. It is not uncommon for an older homosexual to introduce a young person into homosexuality, but the handwriting of the younger one showed the tendencies toward homosexuality long before.

This ends the correction to the statement I made so many years ago. Handwriting does reveal a homosexual nature but only under certain con­ditions. All homosexuals do reveal the homosexuality in their handwriting when the handwriting is in the hands of a professional analyst. It does not show to the layman, except by the repeated presence of the small to tiny squared loop at the ends of down strokes in "g", "y", and "j". This is an indicating sign, not conclusive proof, and when you find it, do not rush off madly and assert that So-and-So is a homosexual for, if you do, you may easily get yourself embroiled in legal difficulties out of which it may be costly to escape.

Some of the greatest men and women in history have been homosexuals. Indeed, the Wolfenden Report issued in Great Britain makes one finding that is important in understanding this variant from what is usually classi­fied as "normal". The report says, "In some who work with notable success in occupations which call for service to others, there are those in whom a latent homosexuality provides the motivation for activities of the greatest value to society." Sex is the basis of continuing life. Animals have it and man, because he is animal, is primarily sexual or possessed of sex desires.

It is also one of the most misundertood subjects, possibly, with which man has to cope. Children grow up and learn from other children because the parents very often lack sufficient knowledge of sex.

In this chapter you have studied the handwriting of a large number of people, including citizens of the United States, Canada, and elsewhere in the world. Homosexuality was encouraged under the Hitler regime in Germany, while many other parts of the world handle it as a criminal offense, something of which to be ashamed. Many reformers have a blind but honest belief that homosexuals are actually criminals. This is as far from the truth as it can possibly be. Some of our greatest musicians, artists, engineers, even some of our greatest athletes have lived out their lives as homosexuals.

The research back of this chapter has proved conclusively that a man's handwriting need not show homosexual tendencies or actual practice. And you have learned when the homosexual is most likely to reveal this quirk.
